New York State court reporters are court reporters in New York State that have employment in New York State government agencies and courtrooms. The state courts in New York also include the New York Court courts and the New York City courts also offer a variety of different court reporting positions. Civil Court is a New York City court. Other New York City courts would be the Family Courts. Within the state courts are the appellate courts and the supreme courts. To obtain a New York Supreme Court court reporter position, there is a test given. These tests are announced in the Civil Service newspapers. New York City court reporters have many different opportunities for performing court reporting in New York City. One type of court reporting in New York City is becoming a New York City hearing court reporter. A hearing court reporter reports different types of hearings. Some of the most common hearing court reporter positions occur at the Workmen’s Compensation Board where the hearing officers hear workers cases involving workmen’s compensation claims. There is a test given to obtain such a position but the requirements for a hearing court reporter are usually not as difficult as a court reporter working in the state of federal courts because the nature of the hearings are not as difficult as a complex federal litigation. A court reporter position doing workmen’s compensations hearings is a very good place to begin for a new reporter who is interested in doing some form of court reporting which involves medical terminology and have benefits and the security of a Civil Service position.

Court reporters in New York have many different opportunities to work. New York Court Reporters can work as freelance court reporters or in the court systems. There are many different types of court reporting positions in the court system. New York City, New York State and the United States government have court reporter positions in New York City. New York City handles lawsuits filed against it by the lawyers working for corporation counsel. The New York City Corporation Counsel has court reporting companies bid for its work and then issues a contract to a freelance court reporting firm to do its firm. This firm then hires court reporters to go and take the depositions for the city of New York. Other city agencies also hire court reporters to do depositions. Workmen’s Compensation is another government agency that hires court reporters. There are many other city agencies which hire court reporters. Some of these agencies, like Corporation Counsel, bid their work out on contracts. Others, like Workmen’s Compensation, hire reporters directly. They give tests periodically and hire court reporters on how well they did on their tests.
